Answer engine optimization (AEO)
Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the practice of getting a brand named in the answer an engine writes, instead of in the list of links below it. An answer engine is anything that responds to a question directly, which today means ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and before them meant featured snippets and voice assistants.
What the work involves
Three things carry most of the weight. Buyer questions get answered in the words people use, on pages the brand controls. Its description stays consistent across the third-party sites an engine reads, since one answer is written by drawing across many sources rather than by ranking one of them. And the facts an engine needs to name a brand without hedging are published somewhere it can find them, meaning what the product does, who it is for, what it costs and how it compares.
How progress is measured
A rank tracker cannot do it, because an answer has no positions to read. The measurement is to ask the buyer questions directly, more than once, and count how often the brand comes back named without having been mentioned in the question. Counts with their total, taken the same way each time, are what shows whether the publishing moved anything.
