# The directories AI assistants cite most (and how to get listed)

> What our citation sample can prove about directories, what it cannot rank, and how to choose third-party profiles without inventing a citation claim.

There is no defensible universal ranking of the directories AI assistants cite most. The answer depends on the category, the question and whether the assistant is using web search. Our own citation sample does not support the eight-site ranking that this post used to present.

## What our citation sample found

We classified 438 URLs attached to 505 live buyer answers from ChatGPT and Gemini over 60 days. Of those URLs, 400 pointed to a home page and 38 to a product, pricing or service page. None pointed to a URL that our path classifier recognized as a FAQ, help center, blog or news article.

The sample did not classify directory domains as a separate category, so it cannot tell us whether G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, Reddit, Product Hunt or AlternativeTo was cited most. Publishing an ordered list from that data would invent a precision the measurement does not contain.

The full method, totals and caveats are in [FAQ page or H2 sections: what AI models actually cite](/blog/faq-page-vs-h2-sections-what-ai-models-cite). The result changes the first priority: make the brand's own home and product pages answer the buyer's questions before treating a directory listing as the main citation strategy.

## How to choose a directory without a universal ranking

Start with the category, not a generic list.

1. Ask the open questions a buyer uses to choose in your category.
2. Keep the answers and the cited URLs from the same run.
3. Separate a brand mention from a linked source. Our guide to [mentions and citations](/learn/mention-vs-citation) explains why they are different measurements.
4. Count the third-party domains in that sample.
5. Work on the sources that appear for competitors in those answers, provided your product genuinely belongs there.

This produces a category-specific list that can be checked against the raw answers. It also avoids claiming that a profile is valuable merely because the directory is well known.

## What to do with a relevant profile

If a directory or community appears in your category's answers, keep the public facts complete and consistent with your own site. Use the product name buyers know, describe who it is for, link to the canonical product page and ask only real customers for reviews. Do not manufacture reviews or forum mentions.

The same rule applies to roundups and comparison sites. Inclusion is useful evidence only when the page describes the product accurately and the publication is relevant to the buyer's question.

## Keep the priority tied to the buyer questions

A directory profile is not a substitute for answering the question on your own site. In our buyer-question map for a wishlist app, the models named the product in 24 of 36 answers overall but in 0 of the 12 open questions. The issue became visible only after branded and open questions were separated. Read the example in [query fan-out: the buyer questions that decide if AI recommends you](/blog/query-fan-out-buyer-questions-ai-visibility).
